Hazards in the Home

Make your home a safer place for your pets by keeping them away from the following hazardous items, plants, foods, objects, and trouble areas.

HOUSEHOLD ITEMS:

 

 Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc), Acetaminophen, Cold and flue medications, antidepressants,vitamins,home insect products, rat and mouse bait, bleach, diet pills, disinfectants, fabric softener, lead, lighter fluid, mothballs, anti-cancer drugs, solvents (paint thinners, etc.), flea and tick products, drain cleaners, liquid potpourri, slug and snail bait, oven cleaner sprays, lime/scale remover, fly bait, detergents, tobacco products

PLANTS

OBJECTS

Balls ( specifically balls that are small or have a smooth outer coating), batteries

bread twist ties, buttons, coins, glass, hair pins, jewelry, nylons, paper clips,

plastic wrap, rubber bands, sharp objects (knives, razors, scissors, nails, needles, etc.)

string, yarn, or dental floss .

OUTSIDE THE HOME

Algae, Antifreeze/Coolant, Fire pit/Grill, Deck lattice, De-icing salts, Compost,

Gasoline, Oil, Pesticides (especially rat poison), Cocoa bean shell mulch fertilizer

Swimming pools and hot tubs.

 

HOLIDAY HAZARDS

 

ALL ALCOHOL

 

VALENTINE'S DAY~ Flowers and Candy: many types of flowers and plants found in bouquets are harmful to dogs and cats if they are ingested.  Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures, and in severe cases chocolate poisoning can be fatal.

 

EASTER~ Fake Grass if ingested can cause pets to choke or even obstruct their intestines

 

4th OF JULY~ Fireworks can scare your pets making them run off or cause serious injuries if detonated near them.  Many formulations are also toxic if ingested.  Also children can be cruel and attached fireworks to pets tails, its best to keep animals inside

 

HALLOWEEN~ Harmful pranks, repeatedly opening doors to trick or treaters, candles, candy and chocolate

 

THANKSGIVING~ Turkey bones and hot containers

 

CHRISTMAS~ Holiday plants such as Christmas rose, holly, lilies and mistletoe are toxic, ribbons may cause chocking hazards to intestine blockage, bubbling lights, fire salts, angel hair/tinsel, Christmas tree water, decoration hooks, Styrofoam, and ornaments.
